On Making Music

On making music PicThis week we are mourning the loss of the Welsh Music Foundation. As an organisation it provided support and industry advice to Welsh bands & musicians for over 14 years and is a huge blow for music in our country.

This week however also sees the release of a new book called ‘On Making Music’ by my friend and BBC broadcaster Adam Walton. The book is a wide-ranging guide for original music-makers, encouraging originality and covering many different aspects of being a musical artist in 2014: songwriting, recording, getting gigs, making money, DIY releases etc.

I firmly believe that some of the industry support and guidance lost due to the demise of the WMF will be regained through the knowledge and experience that has been put in to this book.

It took Adam a year to write and is 400 pages long. In his own words ‘It’s exhaustive but hopefully not exhausting’

The book features contributions from, and exclusive interviews with, a range of influential artists: Alan Holmes, Andrew Falkous, Angharad Trwbador, Badly Drawn Boy, Charlie Francis, Clive Langer, Colin Newman, David Gedge, David Wrench, Deke Leonard, Donal Whelan, E, Elliott Smith, Frank Black / Black Francis, Georgia Ruth, Gruff Rhys, Huw Stephens, Ian Brown, Jarvis Cocker, Jeremy Gluck, Jim Bob, Jimi Goodwin, Jo Riou, John Hywel Morris, John Rostron, Jon Langford, Julia Ruzicka – Prescriptions, Kim Fowley, Kristin Hersh, Liam Gallagher, Manda Rin, Marcus Warner, Mark Daman Thomas / Shape Records, Mark Foley, Martin Carr, Matt Robin, Matthew Evans, Mike Peters, Neil Innes, Owain Trwbador, Owen Powell, Paul Draper, Paul Gray, Polly Thomas, Ray Davies, Rhydian Dafydd, Richard Hawkins, Richard Parfitt, Ritzy Bryan, Stephen Moshi Moshi, Tjinder Singh, Tom Robinson, Turnstile Music, Van McCann…

The book can be downloaded HERE

Adam says that the intention for On Making Music is for it to be as accessible and affordable as possible so he is kindly making the guide available as a donation based download !!

I think that ‘On Making Music’ is set to become something of a standard resource for all of us who record and release music here in Wales and beyond and I recommend that you grab a copy NOW !!

The Wires 2012

072Last year my friend and London-based performance artist and poet Jude Cowan Montague suggested that we work together on a project.

Over a period of time we assembled a 29 minute piece entitled The Wires 2012. The album is a sound art collage created from  Jude’s new poetry collection of the same name.

Jude works as an archivist on the Reuters collection and her book interprets selective international news stories of 2012 in a continuous stream.

I took Jude’s recordings of the work and collaged them with audio recordings of my day-to-day sounds and events including a ride on an open top London tour bus, preliminary completions for the Urdd National Eisteddfod and the Star Wars exhibition at LEGOLAND Windsor.

The album is out NOW Via Pethau Garw and can be ordered from the Bandcamp link below

For more information regarding Jude and her work please visit her website

Derrero Album Re-issues

dd1In the 17 years since the first Derrero album was released a lot has changed in the way that way music is distributed and consumed. Back in 1997 the ‘Blue’ album came on Cd & Vinyl and that was your lot.

Once the band split that was pretty much the end of the story for those songs ! They became a distant memory in the minds of those that fondly remembered the band.

After Derrero played a short set together two years ago I proudly announced that I’d take responsibility for making our old albums available again in a digital format and then promptly forgot all about it until now !!

This week however marks the return of Derrero !!! or at least the return of our music.

If you are still of a mind to be interested in such things all of the 3 albums & 3 EP’s that Derrero released between 1997 – 2002 can be downloaded for free at the link below

If you do grab a copy of one of those releases please take a moment to give us a mention on the social network of your choice.

photo.jpg1Welcome pop pickers to another year of Pulco mayhem !

Just a quick post to let you know what I have in store for you all over the coming months!

Work is pretty much complete now on a new album called ‘Innovation In The Trade’

Inspired by abstract drumming, The Fall, Mersey poet Adrian Henri and a good dose of Dadaism, ‘Innovation In The Trade’ is designed to crackle out of your speakers like a weird late night Radio play!

I’m hoping to put out the track ‘Open Your Wallets’ as a single

As a spin-off from the album and as part of my continued exploration of Dadaism I will be attempting to record an interpretation of a lovely play for 7 voices written by Tristan Tzara in 1927. The Play is called ‘The Gas Heart’ and various pals of mine are already recording their parts. Not sure when this project will be completed but I’ll let you all know when we are done

The play also requires a certain amount of music and it looks like Derrero will reform to record some tunes for the soundtrack.

We are  going to start working out some ideas over the next month or so and  see how it goes. As you can imagine, I’m quite excited about the prospect !!!

As always I have a certain amount of collaborative work on the go too. I’ve just started writing some stuff with the marvelous Mr Stuart Kidd from ‘The Wellgreen’ themed around our mutual love of home recording

Here is Stu’s lovely tune ‘Little Lucy’ to give you a flavor of his genius !!

Ok, one final thing before I finish. I’m putting the final touches to a new book of poetry called ‘Tales From The Cutlery Drawer’ To begin with I gonna make the book available digitally through Amazon/Kindle but I’d love to make some physical copies if I can afford it. If anyone would like to publish it for me the let me know !!

Anyway ! Thats about it for now !

Cheers and high fives all round

The Scores On The Doors

Happy Christmas folks ! Well, another year is nearly over and just before I shut up shop until the weather gets better here is a quick blast back over the musical nuggets that have come out of Pulco HQ in 2013. I won’t dwell on the releases below ’cause links are given which provide the details !! Phwee, here we go then !!

Back in Feb I contributed two tracks to the wonderful Johnno Casson remix album ‘Window Dressing’ . Here is one of those tracks.

I also collaborated with Laurence Made Me Cry on a track for the album ‘The Diary Of Me’

In April I decided to start the Pethau Garw website to help promote some of the great DIY music that I’ve come across in 2013 as well as to showcase more of my own art, poetry and experimental music.(sorry folks the site is now closed)

The first musical release to go up on Pethau Garw was my own ‘Sound Series Vol 1’ – This was a 20 Minute sound collage in two parts featuring field recordings, electronics and new poetry.

Please have a look at the site if you have a moment. There are releases up there from Sweet Benfica, Picturebox & Johnno Casson plus loads of my drawings and poetry !!

In 2013 I also celebrated 10 years of Pulco !!!  To acknowledge this marvelous fact I asked 15 friends of mine including Cymbient, Euros Childs and John Wright to record cover versions of some of my tunes. The resulting album was  ‘Modular Pursuits’ Here is a great cover of Clean Face by No Middle Name.

In July, Folkwit put out the main Pulco album of the year, ‘Clay Cutlery’. The cult Japanese artist Hideuki Katsumata created this amazing video for the track ‘The Spectre’

In the fall I final got to release some new tracks with my old mates Adam Leonard and Stephen Mcleod. The RELYCS project put out a cassette only EP called ‘Songs For Abandoned Tube Station’ in Sept.  A download of the EP is now available here

Relycs Pic 1final

Which brings me finally to the APES EP. My summer session for radio show ‘The Garden Of Earthly Delights’ was released in EP form in Nov. Limited edition CD’s are still available here if anyone fancies one.

If you’d like to spend a bit more time working through 10 years worth of tunes then pop over to my Bandcamp site and to Pethau Garw.

I’d like to say a big thanks to all of my friends and supporters who have stuck by me this year and I look forward to bringing you all lots of new music in 2014. I’ll post news of all the new projects up here in January. Until then have a great Xmas and tara.

New Album – Work In Progress

I bought this book  featuring the poet Adrian Henri while on holiday over the summer and it kind of gave me the 8030193602_cc79fe147e_bmotivation to start a new album. His poems are ace and I have mostly used them as lyrics on the tunes I’m working on at the moment.
I got listening  to Captain Beefheart  (especially the drums on Trout Mask Replica) and early albums by the Fall and decided to record something more hard-edged this time – ie no acoustic guitar !!
When I thought about how to put the album together I had this idea to construct a slightly Dadaist imaginary radio programme (the Pulco Show) that would have songs, poems and weird little dramatic interludes. There is a theatre like intro and cheesy credits outro.
The album is called ‘Innovation In The Trade’
The track below is a rough mix of a song called ‘Fan Heater’ it is a jolly tune with gnarly guitars and a shouty vocal – (track deleted sorry)
